1. Introduction

Cross-platform games are games which can be played on a number of different platforms such as iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux, HTML5. It's possible to learn how to make games for each of these platforms writing native code for each target platform, but it can be time consuming, and require much more effort in the long term to maintain each platform's code. Defold is a kind of tool which helps you to write once and deploy to many platforms - including all of the targets mentioned above in bold!

About This Book

This book will walk you through most of the features of Defold chapter by chapter. It is a supplement to the Book of Defold which is a much more in depth guide. This book is shorter, faster, and may be better for people already familiar with game development ideas. Even if you're completely new to game development you can still follow along and learn how to use Defold to make games that can be played on many different platforms.

This book is meant to get you quickly into working with Defold. Thus the title Dive into Defold!

This book is meant to be read and followed along chapter by chapter and not in random order. You will build up projects piece by piece between chapters as you follow along doing each step yourself.

This book uses Defold editor version 2. Version 1 can still be used to follow along but it will look different. This book uses Windows 10 for screenshots but any of the operating systems which Defold supports can be used.

This book is being published into the public domain. Anyone can contribute improvements / translations to it! Anyone can distribute it!
